Clerk of Patrick County Circuit Court Sherri M. Hazlewood and her husband, Richard Wayne Hazlewood, were charged Tuesday with misdemeanor domestic assault on each other.

Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith said deputies Matt Rorrer and C.L. Elgin responded at about 2:20 a.m. Tuesday to an incident at a home at 1774 Wayside Road, which is listed in the officers' report as Sherri Hazelwood's address.

“Richard Hazlewood stated to me that his wife, Sherri Hazlewood, came at him in an aggressive manner, swinging her arms, almost hitting him," a criminal complaint by Rorrer against Sherri Hazlewood states. "He stated that he then pushed her on to bed to stop her. She then punched him in the face. When I arrived, I observed that Richard was bleeding from his lip and left cheek.”

A criminal complaint by Elgin against Richard Wayne Hazlewood alleges Sherri Hazlewood stated that she and Richard “had gotten into an argument and that Richard had shoved her over a mirror and then pinned her down on the bed, holding her there for several minutes.”

Elgin’s criminal complaint also alleged that “after speaking with Richard, he also admitted to holding her down on the bed and pushing her….”

Elgin’s criminal complaint lists Richard Hazlewood’s address as 24207 Jeb Stuart Highway, Stuart.

Smith said that state law requires that if there is probable cause, a charge must be filed, and in this case, there was probable cause for both parties to be charged.

Smith said he asked the Virginia State Police to take over the investigation because Sherri Hazlewood is a state official but that the state police declined, saying there was nothing to investigate.

The Hazlewoods were arrested, released on their personal recognizance and are scheduled to appear in Patrick County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court at 8:30 a.m. June 27.
