Betty Ann Roach Manning, 77, of Axton, passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at her residence. She was born in Henry County, on March 4, 1942, to Jesse Neal Roach and Lena Robertson Roach, both deceased. Betty was a lifetime member of Axton Baptist Church and retired from Warren Trucking Company. She was an avid crafts-woman and loved baking for friends and family. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, George "Jack" R. Manning Sr.; daughter, Alice Howerton (Scott); son, George R. Manning Jr. (Jennifer); grandchildren, Brantly, Ainsley Claire and Aspen Howerton, and Jackson, Jaime and Georgia Manning; sister, Janie Sue Barker; and brother, Jesse "Bootsie" Roach (Bonnie). The funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at 2 p.m. at McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville, with the Rev. Tony Lundy and Chris Robertson officiating. Charles Houston Surber Sr., 91, of Axton, Va., passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2020. He was born on October 10, 1928, in Symth County, Va., to the late Lelia Mabel Johnson Surber and James Dunkley Surber. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Surber; sons, Larry and Mike Surber; stepfather, Orville Taylor; and brothers, James Surber and Raymond Taylor. Mr. Surber served in the Navy during World War II and worked in coal mines. He loved fishing, coin collecting, and reading. He had lived in Welch, W.Va., Wirtz, Va., and Axton, Va. He is survived by his children, Houston Surber (Jenny) of Martinsville, Va., Delores "Pinkie" Haskins (Flop) of Bassett, Va., Charlotte Surber of Martinsville, Va., Patricia Surber of Axton, Va., Cynthia Fulcher of Axton, Va., Charles Bailey of Trinity, N.C., and Eddie Bailey of Princeton, W.Va.; grandchildren, Cheyenne Surber, Jennifer Gilley, Tracie Surber, Scarlett Surber, Samantha Haskins, Kenneth Haskins, Stevie Booth, Travis Wood, Tanya Davis, Charlie Bailey, and Marcus John Bailey; great-grandchildren, Trinity Surber, Madeline Surber, Traven Gilley, Logan Surber, Wynter Surber-Johnson, Ryleigh Haskins, Marcus Bailey, Jack Davis, Jimmy Surber, and Luke Davis; and brother, Ronald Taylor of Pounding Mill, Va. REIDSVILLE, N.C. Richard Clay Tate, 77, of Reidsville, N.C., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at his home. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2020, at Evergreen Memory Gardens. The family will see friends following the service at the cemetery. A native of Ridgeway, Va., he was a son of the late James W. and Iris Frye Tate and had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was retired from the Rockingham County School System maintenance department. He was preceded in death by his loving companion of 45 years, Frances Lunsford; daughter, Lynn Tate; sister, Fern McDevitt; brother, Chass Tate; stepdaughter, Terri L. Stultz; and stepgranddaughter, Stacy Sharpe. Survivors include his brothers, Johnny Tate (Valerie) of Boydton, Va., Andy Tate (Karen) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jimmy Tate (Carol) of Virginia Beach, Va.; stepdaughters, Janice L. Dewey Franklin Whorley, age 79, went to be with the Lord, on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, N.C., after six months of declining health. Born on February 5, 1941, in the Elamsville community of Patrick County, he was the son of Walter Whorley and Vergie Lester Whorley. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Marie Turner Whorley, and daughter, Drema Kay Whorley. Mr. Whorley owned and operated Whorley's Drywall for 50 years. He also owned Whorley's Heaters, and Whorley's Locksmith and Lawnmower Shop. He is survived by one sister, Juanita McGuire Lackey of Sutherlin, Va.; one nephew, Ronnie McDaniel of Raleigh, N.C.; three great-nieces, Angela Thompson, Karen Dodson, and Maggie McDaniel, along with a number of great-great-nieces and nephews. He was a member of Rich Acres Baptist Church. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Wright Funeral Service Chapel.
