Geneva Young Gregory, 83, of Martinsville, Va., passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2020. She was born on December 12, 1936. Mrs. Gregory was preceded in death by her mother, Thelma Young Prater; husband, Douglas H. Gregory; and brothers, Donald "Glee" Young, Clarence T. Young, and Mike Mabe. Mrs. Gregory retired from Sara-Lee. She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Clark (Marcus) of Martinsville, Va.; two sons, Douglas H. Gregory Jr. of Martinsville, Va., and Randy Gregory (Rhonda) of Martinsville, Va.; sisters, Lorine Adams of Martinsville, Va., Shirley Foley (Moir) of Bassett, Va., Evelyn Craig (Clarence) of Bassett, Va., Vera Dodson (Jim) of Collinsville, Va., and Dot Goad (Doug) of Martinsville, Va.; brother, Larry Young (Nancy) of Mt. Airy, N.C.; sister-in-law, Mildred Young of Patrick Springs, Va.; grandchildren, Lane Clark (Emily) of Martinsville, Va., and Ashley Bailey (Jason) of Mocksville, N.C.; and great-grandchildren, Caleb Bailey and Ryleigh Clark. Susan Penn Hairston, 79, of Martinsville, Virginia, entered eternal rest Tuesday, December 31, 2019, at SOVAH of Martinsville. She was born August 29, 1940 in Patrick County, Virginia, to the late Russell and Alverta "Dolly" Hylton Penn. In addition to her parents, she was preceeded in death by her husband, Raish Hairston Sr.; two sons, Wendell Lamont Hairston and Raish "Whistle" Hairston Jr.; three brothers, Herman Penn, Corbert Penn and Robert Troy Penn and four sisters, Ronnie Penn, Helen Nibblet, Hester Scott and Louise Carolina. She was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Fieldale, Virginia. As a loving sister, mother, grandmother, she loved and adored her family. She leaves to cherish her life and memory; three daughters, Wanda (Jeff) Belcher, Rachael (Jerome) Galloway, and MaKaai Hairston, all of Martinsville, Virginia; two sons, Dyrll Hairston of Washington, D.C. and LeVair (LaToya) Hairston of Martinsville, Virginia; one brother, Baily (Vergie) Penn of Martinsville, Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Rose Brimmer and Elder Buelah Penn of Martinsville, Virginia; and a brother-in-law, Louis Nibblet of Martinsville, Virginia; fifteen grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Marsha Kaye Ingram, 56, of Carver Court, Martinsville, Va., departed this life on Monday, December 30,2019, at SOVAH Health-Martinsville. Josephine "Joanne" Roberts Shelburne, of Lynchburg, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, at her home. Born on August 29, 1943, in Martinsville, she was the daughter of the late Louis Wilkerson Roberts and the late Mavis Bowling Roberts. Joanne was retired from Centra Health after 21 years of employment in patient access. She was also employed by the Shell Station on Timberlake Road for over twenty years and enjoyed customers and friends. She was the owner and operator of DeHass Sub and Sandwich Shop on Timberlake Road for over 10 years. She was well known for her homemade bread and other signature items. She loved spending time at Smith Mountain Lake, horseback riding, playing with her grandchildren and socializing. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She is now with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she loved. In addition to her parents, Joanne was preceded in death by two brothers, James Michael "Mike" Roberts and Louis W. Roberts, Jr. Joanne is survived by her daughters, Gala Shelburne and her husband, Brian Powell, of Lynchburg, Dianne Witt and her husband, Barry, of Forest, and Anne Smith and her husband, Matt, of Forest; sister-in-law, Ann Horton Roberts of Martinsville; five grandchildren, Sierra Witt, Dakota Witt, Douglas Powell, Evelyn Smith and Elaine Smith; and other loving family members and friends. A graveside service will be conducted 12 p.m. Saturday, January 4, 2020, at Roselawn Cemetery in Martinsville. There will be no visitation hours at the funeral home. Henry Grady Snead, 100, of Bassett, died Tuesday, December 31, 2019, at Sovah Health Martinsville. He was born July 22, 1919 to the late Isaac Jefferson Snead and Sarah Ruth Thomas Snead. He was a lifelong resident of Henry County and was raised on a farm with his parents and six siblings. Grady attended school in Henry County until the age of nine when he was ask to attend a trade school which is now known as Ferrum College. After marriage, he started his family in the community of Oak Level. Grady began working as Stanleytown Furniture as a very young age having earned 10 cents per hour. One of his proudest moments was being able to show his father he had saved $200.00 that year. He bought his first car at the age of 14 for $300.00 which led to his career of buying and selling vehicles from factories all around. He also had been a moonshiner for several years and loved to reminisce about out running police officers at 100 miles per hour. We could all use a page from Grady's book of life and his philosophy on surviving. He worked very hard to make something out of nothing and show others you can be someone. He said, "You just gotta learn to survive." He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bettie Frances Turner Snead; three sisters, Roduskia Snead Craig, Evelyn Snead Kirby, Rachel Snead Marsh; two brothers, H. L. Snead and John Harvey Snead. He is survived by a daughter, Lillie Frances Snead; a son and daughter-in-law, James Carlton and Joyce Snead; three grandchildren, James Darrell Snead (Trina), Donna L. Gilbert, Michael R. Snead (Fran); five great-grandchildren, Courtney Snead, Lauren Snead, Journey Gilbert, Camri Gilbert, Trinity Gilbert; one great-great-granddaughter, Kyleigh Snead and one brother, Russell Morris Snead. The family will receive friends Saturday, January 4, 2020, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in the Bassett Funeral Service where a service will be held at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Joe Glass and Dr. Lew Bennett officiating. A private burial will be held Monday, January 6, 2020, at Henry Memorial Park.
