Judith Glenn Smith "Judy" Harned of Russellville, Kentucky, age 80, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2020, at the Hospice of Southern Kentucky in Bowling Green, Kentucky. She was a Simpson County, Kentucky native, daughter of Henry Clay and Julia Reed Smith both deceased, passed away 1999 and 1984. Judy is survived by her husband, Thomas Lanier "Tom" Harned of the home; a son, Stephen Smith Harned of Danville, Virginia; a daughter, Julia Kathleen Harned of Martinsville, Virginia; a grandson, Thomas Stafford Hairfield of McDill Airforce Base of Tampa, Florida; and a brother, Reed Smith of Franklin, Kentucky. Judy was a graduate of Franklin-Simpson High School and attended Murray State University and Western Kentucky University. She and Tom celebrated their 58th anniversary in 2019. She resided in Martinsville, Virginia from 1967 until returning to south central Kentucky in 2008 to reside in Russellville, Kentucky. While in Virginia she was the founder of the Martinsville Jaycettes and the Martinsville Red Hats organizations. She worked at Tultex Corporation in personnel and payroll and was self-employed rental property manager. Judy was a lifelong bridge player belonging to several bridge clubs in Virginia and Kentucky. She enjoyed interior decorating and received many complements on her decorating skills. She loved flowers and was an active gardener. Judy was active in the Blue Ridge Quilting Gild and the Virginia Quilting Gild hosting a Virginia state convention in Martinsville. She won several awards for her quilts. She was a member of the Red Hats, the Logan County Homemakers Club and a member of the United Methodist Temple in Russellville, Kentucky. Funeral services for Judy Harned will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at the United Methodist Temple with the Rev. Wayne Sayre officiating, burial will follow in Woodburn Cemetery. Visitation at the church will be held Wednesday, January 8, 2020, beginning at 10 a.m. lasting until the time of the service at 1 p.m. Summers and Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
James Wade Higgins Jr., 52, of Ridgeway, Va., passed away on Monday, January 6, 2020. He was born on October 23, 1967, in Martinsville, Va., to JoAnn Cartee Higgins and James Wade Higgins Sr. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Jennifer Pace Higgins and son, Sullivan Grey Higgins, both of the home. Mr. Higgins was retired from Laurel Park Middle School where he was a physical science teacher. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel with the Rev. Merle Brown officiating. Mr. Lewis Elmer Lawson, age 60, of Elamsville Community of Patrick County, Va., passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2020. Mr. Lawson was born on May 23, 1959, in Stuart, Va. He was a son of the late Elmer Hardy Lawson and the late Doretha Rose Lawless Lawson. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Tina Michelle Hutchens. He was employed by Hanes Brands until his retirement. Mr. Lawson is survived by his wife of forty years, Teresa Clifton Lawson; son, Lucas James Lawson (Amy); sisters, Elaine Vaughn (Gary), Evelyne Sigmon (Luther), Mary Oplene Adkins (Booker), Carolene Lawson (Alan Howell Jr.); brothers, Cecil Lawson (Pamela), and Randall Lawson (Sherry); grandchildren, Zachary James Lawson and Anthony Lee Lawson; and eleven nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at Collins Funeral Home, 30 Riverside Drive, Bassett, Va. Interment will follow in the Lawson Family Cemetery. Curtis Lee Setliff, 86, of Bassett, Va. passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2020, at his home. He was born on June 18, 1933, in Henry County, Va., to the late Della Moore Setliff and Charlie Setliff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ida Mullins and Catherine Fisher; and brothers, Grady Setliff and Paul Setliff. Curtis was a member of Day Star Ministries where he served as a trustee, usher, group leader, on the finance committee, helped with youth camps, and many other activities. He was retired from E.I. DuPont and served in the United States Army. He is survived by his wife, Christine Ingram Setliff of the home; son, Gary Lee Setliff (Wanda) of Bassett, Va.; daughter, Vicki Nester (Wade) of Bassett, Va.; sisters, Mary Shively (Buddy) of Henry, Va., and Shirley Bowles (David) of Ridgeway, Va.; and brother, David Setliff (Bernice) of Henry, Va. Also surviving are grandson, Andrew Nester (Christy); step-grandchildren, Brittany Byrd (Cole) and Brandon Light (Jodi); great-grandson, River Nester; step-great-grandchildren, Bella Light, Brenna Light, Brodi Light, Aubrey Byrd, and Bristol Byrd; and one great-grandbaby on the way. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel with Pastors Sammy Cardwell and Donald Brown officiating. Bernice Penn Valentine, age 85, of Martinsville, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2020. She was born in Martinsville, Virginia on June 30, 1934, to the late Edgar Wade Penn and Ruth Ann Hagwood Penn. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Melvin Penn, Dewey Penn, Marvin Penn and Lloyd Penn. She was a member of Mount Olive East Christian Church. She had worked for Central Storage for over 20 years. She was a homemaker a member of the Eastern Star and loved spending time with her special family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Quincly Valentine of the home, and her daughter, Courtenay "Shaun" Valentine of the home. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at 12 p.m., at Mt. Olive East Christian Church, 3611 Spencer-Preston Road, Martinsville, Virginia.
