Joyce Ann Young de Rodriguez, formerly of this area, passed away at her home in Guadalajara, Mexico on Tuesday, January 15, 2019. She was born on May 30, 1944 in Martinsville, Va. to the late Thomas Lowell and Ethel Bouldin Young.

She was a graduate of Drewry Mason High School and Wake Forest University. She taught Spanish and French at Towson High School in Maryland before moving to Guadalajara, where she co-authored a series of English textbooks for Spanish-speaking children. She also taught English in secondary school in Guadalajara, and gave private English classes to both children and adults. In addition, she translated a number of books from English for publication in Spanish.

She was an expert needlewoman whose many cross-stitch projects were genuine works of art. She loved travel, and visited many countries around the world. Her greatest delight was entertaining her entire family for dinner every Friday.

She is survived by her husband, Agustin Rodriguez Aguayo; her sons, Agustin (Lorena) and Alejandro (Claudia); her daughter, Joyce (Enrique); and her seven beloved grandchildren, Maria Fernanda, Ana Carolina, Maximiliano, Alegra, Matias, Andrea and Pablo. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Carolyn (Jim); her brother, Bob (Janice); her sister-in-law, Marcela (Jorge), her sister-in-law Rosa; her housekeeper and friend of many years, Maria Magdalena Torres; and her godson, Victor Hugo Vargas; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral vigil was held on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at the Chapel of the Cemetery in Guadalajara followed by funeral masses at Our Lady of Altamira in Guadalajara on January 16, 17 and 18, 2019.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of her life from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Monday, July 8, 2019 at the Spencer-Penn Centre, 475 Spencer Penn Road, Spencer, Va. 24165. A light lunch will be served.
