To the editor:

It was with some amusement and bewilderment that I read Mr. Eanes’ letter ("Unhappy Democrats," May 7), taking the Democrats to task for doing their Constitutionally authorized duty to hold the executive branch of the government accountable for its actions. Surely he doesn’t agree with Rudy Giuliani, the president’s lawyer, that any Russian interference in our democracy is okay as long as it serves a re-elect Donald Trump.

In fact the smell drifting south from Washington is the Republicans who will do anything to get re-elected, even if it means allowing their president to obstruct justice. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report said as much, if you read it. You’ll also find the report would have found the Trump team guilty of cooperating with the Russians, but they were too inept to pull it off.

I remember when Republicans used to put country ahead of party (Nixon). Now it’s up to the Democrats and the American voting public to put Trump in the dustbin of history.
