Martinsville Post 42 17, Roanoke Post 3 Cutters 8

Things looked bleak early on at Kawanis Field in Salem for the Martinsville Post 42 junior legion team. Roanoke Post 3 Cutters, the No. 3 seed, jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings, but Post 42 chipped away with three runs in the third inning, two more in the fifth inning, and then Martinsville, the No. 6 seed, exploded for 11 runs in the sixth inning to take control for a 17-8 upset win to open the District F tournament.

The sixth-inning rally began with a one-out walk by Colin Cunningham. Lucas Wilson followed with a single, and then Kyle Ramsey drove them both in with a double to cut the deficit to just one, 8-7. Seth Martin and Conner Plaster each got hit by pitchers to load the bases, and Drew Fisher gave Martinsville the lead with a double, 9-8.

The line kept rolling when Paxton Tucker drove in Plaster with a single, and then Colton Stegall drove in a pair with a double of his own to make it 12-8. Colby Cunningham made it 13-8 with another double. A few batters later Ramsey made it 14-8, a double steal made it 15-8 and then Martin singled home another to make it 16-8.

Tucker scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to add another insurance run.

After a rough start in which Roanoke scored eight runs over the course of the first two innings, Cade Varner came in and calmed things down with two innings of perfect relief. He passed the ball off to Ramsey, who worked 3 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Drew Fisher came in for the final two outs to close out the win. The defense was an issue early on, as only three of the eight runs Roanoke Post 3 scored were earned.

Fisher and Ramsey each finished with three RBIs. Stegall drove in two, and Colby Cunningham, Martin, Tucker and Plaster each drove in one. As a team, Post 42 cranked out 17 hits.

Post 42 advances in the winner's bracket, and now moves on to face the winner of No. 2 Roanoke Post 3 Heat and No. 7 Big Island 217. If Roanoke wins, the game will be back at Kiwanis Field at 7 p.m. If Big Island wins, the game will be played at Hooker Field at 7 p.m.
