The Martinsville High School Band Boosters will be parking cars at BB&T Bank in Ridgeway on Sunday as fans come to the area to attend the STP 500 race at Martinsville Speedway.

“I am so thankful that BB&T allows the band to use their lot to help us raise money for the band,” Brian Joyce, band director at Martinsville High School, wrote in an email. “We have been parking cars for over ten years at the BB&T lot and can raise anywhere between $1,500 to $2,000 per race.

“Race fans also get a paved lot that is easy to get in and out of. We charge $20 to park cars and trucks during the Cup Series Races at the Martinsville Speedway.  All of the money raised goes to help support the band students with such things as bus transportation on our annual spring trips, band uniforms, band T-shirts/hoodies and anything else that can help the band program."

He said proceeds this year would help pay to charter uses for a trip to  Williamsburg/Virginia Beach on April 4-6, during whic the concert and jazz bands will compete in Williamsburg. He said the band wanted to raise money to go to Disney World in 2020.

“The MAVAHI marching band will be performing at Disney’s Magic Kingdom, and the jazz band will  be performing  at Disney Springs. The Disney trip is one that the band takes every four years so that members of the band will have a [chance] to go to Disney while they are a member of the MHS band program,” he said.

Yvonne Givens, president of the band boosters, said it is “very generous of BB&T [to allow the boosters] to park cars there and raise money for our students.”

Before the parking begins, the band will be playing, too. On Saturday afternoon it will play the national anthem before the Truck Series race.

“It is a great opportunity for our band to be able to perform the national anthem at some races and have the national exposure on television,” Sarah Byrd, a spokeswoman for Martinsville City Public Schools, wrote in an email,
