7-on-7 football

It’s hard to believe, but football is back.

Well, sort of.

Tuesday night marks the return of the Smith River 7-on-7 Summer Passing League at Smith River Sports Complex.

Bassett and Magna Vista headline the teams in Week 1 of the league. The Bengals and Warriors will be joined by G.W.-Danville, Dan River, Hidden Valley and McMichael (NC) tonight. Each team will play four games, but fans will have to wait until later in the summer to see the Smith River rivals face off.

Games will kickoff at 6 p.m., and the last group of games will start at 7:30 p.m.

For those new to the 7-on-7 event, players are not in uniform, but do wear helmets. It’s two-hand touch, so there is no tackling. There is no blitzing the quarterbacks, but QBs are on a timer, and if they don’t release the ball before a four or five-second buzzer sounds it will be counted as a sack. Teams have four downs to get a first down. There are no punts. Failure to get a first down, or score a touchdown, means the opposing team gets possession and the process starts again.

The rest of the summer schedule is Wednesday, June 19, Tuesday, June 25, Tuesday, July 9, and Tuesday, July 16.
