Gibbs is the grandson of Joe Gibbs, owner of the NASCAR Cup Series team Joe Gibbs Racing and former Washington Redskins head coach. The younger Gibbs is a JGR development driver. He posted on his Twitter account he will run seven races with Nelson this season.
“It feels good and an honor that they would entrust him with us at Nelson Motorsports to drive this year,” Nelson said by phone Monday. “It feels good that we’re doing something right and good enough here in Martinsville and Henry County that it’s taken notice of one of the top racing teams in NASCAR to send his grandson here to race with us and run our equipment and under our tutelage.”
“It’s kind of an honor I think,” he added. “My guys, and myself, we’re going to do our best… I told him this morning, ‘I’m going to do my best to help you win several races with us.’”
Gibbs will also run for JGR in the Arca Menards series this summer. He has previous late model experience driving the CARS tour the last two seasons. He finished seventh in the 2018 ValleyStar 300 late model race at Martinsville Speedway.
Gibbs will run alongside fellow Nelson Motorsports full-time driver Bobby McCarty, who won a CARS Response Energy Tour Championship with Nelson Motorsports last season, his second with the team. Team general manager, and former NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver, Timothy Peters will also run in select races. Riley Herbst, an 18-year-old also a JGR development driver, is also scheduled to run two races with the team this season, according to Nelson.
